Mobile Phone

Mobile phone also known as Cellular phone or Cell phone is a device used to make and receive calls, sending texts, MMS(Multimedia Messaging Service), accessing Internet, used for short-range wireless communications, to use various business applications, and also used for gaming and photography.

A mobile phone performs all these various operations over a radio link spread over a wide geographical area. The radio link is connected to a cellular network provided by the mobile phone operator which further allows the access to the public telephone network. The major difference between a mobile phone and the cordless phone is that, a cordless phone can only be used within a short-range of a single, private base station.

The first mobile phone was demonstrated by John F.Mitchell and Dr.Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973.
The first commercially available mobile phone was DynaTAC 8000x.
It is after World War II when the race to create the portable mobile phones began. The advancement in the technology began with the Bell System's - Mobile Telephone Services introduced the '0G' which could support only a very few calls and was very expensive.

Radiolinja, a company of Finland, launched the second generation '2G'  digital cellular technology on the GSM standards. By 2001, NTT DoCoMo, a company of Japan launched the third generation '3G' technology on the WCDMA standars.
By 2009, it was clear to the users and the companies that the '3G' technology will be quite overwhelming to the growth of the bandwidth-intensive applications such as streaming video. So, the mobile industry started looking for data optimizing 4th generation technology which promised of the various improvements in the technology such as speed, etc.
