Beginning of Smartphones


The mobile phones with the advanced features distinguishing from the basic feature phones are usually known as Smartphones.Earlier Smartphones contains the features of mobile phone with other popular devices such as digital camera, media players, personal digital assistant (PDA) and GPS navigation unit. Modern mobiles phones contains more features like web browsing ,Wi-Fi, 3rd party applications and accessories.


The most powerful and popular smartphones are provided by Google's android and Apple's iOS mobile operating systems.


Simon Personal Communicator from IBM 

In 1997, the term "Smartphone" appeared when Ericsson described its GS 88 "Penelope" concept as "Smartphone". The first company to include the feature of PDA in the mobile phones was IBM. It developed a prototype of PDA in 1992 and demonstrated it in the COMDEX show that year. BellSouth developed a refined version of this product and marketed it to the consumers in 1994 under the name of Simon Personal Communicator. At that time, Simon Personal Communicator was the first device that can be properly referred as the "Smartphone", although that term was not derived back then.  This device was able to make and receive calls and additionally it was also able to send and receive e-mails and faxes through its touch screen display.

In late 1990s, most of the mobile phones had the feature of a separate PDA device running on the early version of Operating Systems such as Palm OS, Blackberry OS or Windows CE/Pocket PC which later evolved into the mobile operating systems.

   Nokia 9000 launched in 1996 

Nokia 9000, which became the top best-selling phone of Nokia was launched in 1996. The Palmtop computer - style phone also had the PDA from HP. The most important feature of Nokia 9000 was a QWERTY Keypad in it, which can be found in today's smartphones too.


In 2001, Kyocera 6035 was introduced by Palm Inc. in which the PDA was combined with the mobile phone and it was operated on Verizon and it was also able to support a limited amount of the web browsing.

Before the Android, iOS, and Blackberry, most of the Smartphones ran on the operating system called Symbian. This operating system was developed by Psion.
